About Faja d'Agua
Fajã d'Água is a picturesque, quiet coastal village nestled in a dramatic, steep-sided valley on the northwestern coast of Brava, the smallest inhabited island in Cabo Verde. Set against a backdrop of towering volcanic cliffs and opening onto a rugged bay of the Atlantic Ocean, the village is widely considered one of Brava's most beautiful hidden gems. Historically, the bay served as a safe haven for American whaling ships in the 18th and 19th centuries, which initiated the long-standing tradition of emigration from Brava to the United States.
Unlike much of the arid parts of the archipelago, Fajã d'Água is remarkably lush and green, irrigated by fresh mountain springs. The local community thrives on traditional small-scale fishing and agriculture, growing mangoes, bananas, papayas, coconut palms, and sugarcane in fertile terraces. The climate is warm and temperate year-round, shielded from the strongest trade winds by the surrounding cliffs, making it a peaceful, end-of-the-world retreat.

Fajã d'Água is connected to the island's capital, Nova Sintra, by a spectacular, winding paved road (approx. 8 km, 20 minutes drive) that hugs the valley walls and coastline. Shared minibuses (aluguers) run from Nova Sintra to Fajã d'Água, particularly in the mornings and afternoons, costing about 150 CVE per passenger. Private taxis can also be hired in Nova Sintra for approximately 1,000 CVE each way.
The village of Fajã d'Água is very small and has only one main cobblestone road and a few narrow footpaths, making it easily explored entirely on foot. Walking is the only way to get around within the village and to reach the nearby natural pools and beaches. For travel back up the valley to Nova Sintra, visitors must wait for a scheduled aluguer or arrange a taxi pickup in advance.
