Why visit Cova Figueira?
Cova Figueira is a quiet coastal town situated on the southeastern slopes of Fogo Island, Cape Verde. Serving as the administrative capital of the Santa Catarina do Fogo municipality, the town is built on volcanic slopes overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. Cova Figueira offers visitors an authentic, peaceful Cape Verdean experience, away from the typical tourist hubs.
The character of the town is defined by its quiet streets and colorful houses, many of which were built by returning Cape Verdean emigrants who spent years working in the United States and Europe. The surrounding area is arid but supports small-scale volcanic agriculture. The town is situated on the slopes of the active volcano, Pico do Fogo, offering panoramic views of both the volcanic peaks and the ocean.
The climate is tropical and semi-arid. The dry season runs from November to June, with pleasant temperatures averaging 24°C to 28°C and cooling ocean breezes. The brief rainy season from August to October can bring warmer temperatures up to 30°C and occasional heavy rainfall that briefly turns the volcanic hills green.
