Why visit Ponta do Sol?
Ponta do Sol is a charming, cliffside fishing town located at the northernmost tip of the island of Santo Antão, Cape Verde. Known for its colorful pastel buildings, historic architecture, and dramatic coastal scenery, it has become one of the main tourist hubs on the island, particularly for hikers. It sits in the municipality of Ribeira Grande and serves as the perfect base for exploring the rugged mountains and lush valleys of the island's northern coast.
The town possesses a relaxed, slow-paced atmosphere, where life centers around the harbor. In the late afternoons, locals and visitors gather at the main square or along the sea wall to watch the dramatic Atlantic waves crash against the cliffs and see the spectacular sunset. The climate is warm and dry year-round, with the best hiking conditions occurring from November to June.

Ask on WhatsAppHow do you get there?
By Plane
There is no airport on Santo Antão. The nearest airport is Cesária Évora Airport (VXE) on the neighboring island of São Vicente, located near Mindelo. From VXE, take a taxi (~1000 CVE) to the ferry terminal in Mindelo.
By Car / Road
From the port of Porto Novo (where the ferries from Mindelo arrive), Ponta do Sol is accessible via a scenic 1-hour drive. You can hire a private taxi (~3000-4000 CVE) or catch a shared minibus, locally known as an aluguer (~400-500 CVE per person), which departs from the port area once full. The road follows the dramatic eastern coastline before turning inland and northern towards Ponta do Sol.
Ponta do Sol is very compact and easily navigated on foot. The town's main streets, harbor, and restaurants are all within a 10-to-15-minute walk. To travel to nearby towns like Ribeira Grande or the Paúl Valley, you can hail a shared aluguer from the main square (Praça) or near the post office. Fares to Ribeira Grande are around 100-150 CVE. Private taxis are also available for hire, but fares should be negotiated before starting the journey as they are not metered.
What are the things to do?
Ponta do Sol Pier (Cais): The heart of the town's daily activity. In the morning, you can watch local fishermen bring in their catch of the day, clean the fish on the stone pier, and sell them directly to locals.
Town Hall (Câmara Municipal): A beautiful colonial-era building painted in pastel colors, located on the main public square.
Jewish Cemetery (Cemitério Judeu): Located on the eastern outskirts of the town on a cliff overlooking the ocean, this historic and somewhat weathered cemetery is a testament to the Jewish families who settled in Santo Antão in the 19th century.
Boca de Pistola Aerodrome: The abandoned, scenic former airstrip located on the flat headland just west of the town center, popular for walking and watching the powerful waves.
Fontainhas Village: Located 4 km west of Ponta do Sol, this picturesque cliffside hamlet features colorful houses clinging to the steep walls of a deep ravine. It was once highlighted by National Geographic for having one of the most beautiful views in the world.
Hike the Ponta do Sol to Cruzinha Trail: This legendary 15 km coastal trail begins in Ponta do Sol and winds along the steep cliffs of the northern coast to the fishing village of Cruzinha, passing through Fontainhas, Formiguinhas, and Corvo. It takes about 4.5 to 6 hours and offers some of the most spectacular coastal hiking in the world.
Listen to Live Morna Music: Spend an evening listening to traditional Cape Verdean music (morna and coladeira) performed live by local musicians at various restaurants and bars in town.
Watch the Sunset: Walk along the seaside promenade near the harbor or the old aerodrome to catch the sun setting over the Atlantic.
