Ribeira Brava

Ilhas de Barlavento, Cabo Verde

Why visit Ribeira Brava?

Ribeira Brava is the colorful colonial capital and administrative center of the island of São Nicolau, Cabo Verde. Nestled in a deep valley between towering volcanic mountains, the town is named after the "fierce river" (Ribeira Brava) that occasionally floods down the valley during rare heavy rains. The town is famous for its vibrant pastel-colored colonial buildings, narrow cobblestone streets, and quiet, traditional atmosphere.

Dating back to the 17th century, Ribeira Brava was built inland to protect it from pirate attacks that plagued coastal settlements. For centuries, it served as a cultural and intellectual hub for the entire archipelago, home to the first seminary in West Africa, which educated many of Cape Verde’s historic writers and politicians. The climate is warm and arid, with pleasant trade winds. The main travel appeal lies in its colonial heritage, local festivals, and proximity to the hiking trails of Monte Gordo.
