Ribeira Grande

Ilhas de Barlavento, Cabo Verde

Why visit Ribeira Grande?

Ribeira Grande is the historical and administrative capital of the spectacular volcanic island of Santo Antão, situated in Cape Verde's northern Barlavento group. Nestled dramatically at the confluence of two deep, vertical valleys—Ribeira da Torre and Ribeira do Paul—where they meet the rough waters of the Atlantic Ocean, the town is home to around 3,000 residents. Ribeira Grande features narrow cobblestone streets, traditional Portuguese-style colonial buildings, and a lively local atmosphere, serving as the cultural and transport hub of the island's northern region.

Unlike the dry and dusty port town of Porto Novo in the south, Ribeira Grande is surrounded by towering, verdant volcanic cliffs and lush agricultural terraces. The town's economy is centered around local commerce, public services, and traditional agriculture. For travelers, Ribeira Grande is the perfect base to explore the north coast of Santo Antão, hike through some of Cape Verde’s most dramatic mountain trails, visit sugarcane distilleries, and experience the laid-back, welcoming nature of local Cape Verdean life.

The climate is tropical and semi-arid, but much more humid and green than the southern part of the island due to moisture trapped by the high mountains. Temperatures are pleasant year-round, typically ranging between 20°C and 27°C. The best time to visit is from November to June, which is the dry season and provides optimal conditions for hiking the mountainous terrain.

How do you get there?

By Plane

There are no active airports on Santo Antão. Visitors must fly into Cesária Évora International Airport (IATA: VXE) on the neighboring island of São Vicente, take a taxi to the Mindelo harbor, and catch a 1-hour ferry to Porto Novo. From the Porto Novo harbor, you can reach Ribeira Grande by road.

By Car / Road

Ribeira Grande is connected to the port town of Porto Novo by two main roads: the historic, cobblestone "Estrada da Corda" (Corda Road), which winds spectacularly over the central mountain ridges (approx. 36 kilometers, 1 hour), and the newer, paved coastal highway which runs along the rocky east coast (approx. 30 minutes). Regular aluguers (shared vans) wait at the Porto Novo harbor to meet all arriving ferries, charging about 400 CVE per person for the journey to Ribeira Grande. Private taxis are also available for around 3,000–4,000 CVE.

Ribeira Grande is a compact town that is very easy to explore entirely on foot. Local taxis are available for quick trips within the town center, charging a flat fare of 150 CVE. Shared aluguers depart regularly from the central market area to nearby coastal towns such as Ponta do Sol (approx. 10 minutes, 100 CVE) and the high mountain valleys.
