Why visit Santa Maria?

Santa Maria is the crown jewel of Cape Verdean tourism, located on the southern tip of Sal Island. Boasting a beautiful, eight-kilometer-long sweep of fine golden sand bathed by clear, warm turquoise waters, Santa Maria has grown from a quiet salt-mining outpost in the 19th century into the country's premier holiday resort destination. Despite its growth and the presence of modern all-inclusive resorts along its coast, the town has managed to retain a colorful, low-rise charm, featuring cobblestone streets, colonial-style architecture, and a lively, relaxed atmosphere.

The lifestyle in Santa Maria revolves around the ocean, sun, and the national motto of "No Stress." It is a hub for water sports lovers from around the world, particularly windsurfers, kitesurfers, and divers, who take advantage of the steady trade winds and rich marine biodiversity. By day, the town center is a pleasant maze of outdoor cafes, surf shops, and craft boutiques. By night, it comes alive with the sound of live morna, coladeira, and funaná music spilling out of bars and beachfront lounges.

The climate is tropical and arid, with virtually year-round sunshine and an average of 350 sunny days per year. Rain is almost non-existent except for rare, light showers in August and September. Trade winds are strongest from November to April, making it the peak season for windsurfing and kitesurfing, while the summer months offer calmer, warmer seas ideal for swimming and diving.
