Tarrafal de Sao Nicolau
Ilhas de Barlavento, Cabo Verde
Why visit Tarrafal de Sao Nicolau?
Tarrafal de São Nicolau is a tranquil coastal port town located on the western coast of the island of São Nicolau, Cabo Verde. It serves as the primary maritime gateway to the island and is its most populous settlement. Known for its laid-back atmosphere, local fishing industry, and unique black volcanic sand beaches, it offers travelers an authentic, low-key experience far removed from the mass tourism of Sal or Boa Vista.
Historically a small fishing village, Tarrafal grew significantly after the construction of its modern port, which handles passenger ferries and cargo ships connecting São Nicolau to the rest of the archipelago. The town is famous throughout Cape Verde for its mineral-rich black sand, which contains titanium and iodine and is locally believed to have therapeutic properties for treating bone and joint ailments. The climate is hot and arid, with constant sea breezes.
