Pombas

Ilhas de Barlavento, Cabo Verde

Why visit Pombas?

Pombas (officially Vila das Pombas) is a colorful coastal town located on the northeastern coast of the island of Santo Antão, Cabo Verde. It is the administrative seat of the Paul municipality and serves as the primary gateway to the spectacular, lush Paúl Valley. Situated at the mouth of the valley where the river meets the Atlantic Ocean, the town is known for its beautiful Portuguese colonial-style architecture, pastel-painted buildings, and peaceful seaside atmosphere.

Unlike the steep, narrow pathways of the upper valley, Pombas is flat and has a pleasant seaside promenade lined with palm trees. The town is dominated by a high rocky outcrop topped by a monumental white church, which overlooks the settlement and the coast. The local economy is tied to both the agricultural activities of the surrounding valley (sugarcane, coffee, tropical fruits) and small-scale tourism. The climate is warm and humid, with a pleasant coastal breeze, and serves as an excellent starting or ending point for valley explorations.

How do you get there?

By Plane

There is no airport on Santo Antão. The nearest airport is Cesária Évora Airport (VXE) on São Vicente island. Visitors fly to VXE, take a taxi (~1000 CVE) to the Mindelo ferry terminal, and board a 1-hour ferry (~800 CVE) to Porto Novo on Santo Antão.

By Car / Road

Pombas is located approximately 20 km northeast of Porto Novo port. It is connected by a modern paved coastal road. You can take a shared minibus (aluguer) from Porto Novo port directly to Pombas, which takes about 25 minutes and costs around 400 CVE per person. A private taxi for the same journey costs about 2500-3000 CVE.

Pombas is small and entirely walkable. The main coastal road, town hall, cafes, and accommodation are all within a 10-minute walk. To travel up the Paúl Valley (towards Passagem or Cabo da Ribeira) or to nearby Ribeira Grande, you can find shared aluguers parked along the main coastal road or near the bridge. Fares for local trips are inexpensive, ranging from 100 to 200 CVE.
