Paul
Ilhas de Barlavento, Cabo Verde
Why visit Paul?
Paul is a valley municipality on the northeastern coast of Santo Antão, the second-largest island in Cabo Verde. Fed by mountain springs and trade-wind cloud cover, the valley features green agricultural terraces cut into steep volcanic slopes. Farmers cultivate sugarcane, bananas, coffee, yams, papayas, and mangoes using a network of stone irrigation canals called levadas.
The municipality stretches from the Atlantic coastal town of Vila das Pombas up to the rim of the Cova de Paúl volcanic crater at an altitude of roughly 1,170 meters. Travelers come to hike the stone trails connecting mountain hamlets, explore traditional sugarcane distilleries (trapiches), and experience rural village life far removed from the desert terrain of flat eastern islands like Sal.
The local climate is subtropical and semi-humid. Temperatures at sea level in Vila das Pombas average 24°C to 28°C year-round, while upper mountain hamlets such as Cabo da Ribeira experience cooler daytime conditions of 18°C to 22°C and regular afternoon mist.

By Air
No air service exists on Santo Antão. The nearest commercial airport is Cesária Évora Airport (VXE) on neighboring São Vicente island, with scheduled flights from Praia (RAI) and Sal (SID) operated by Cabo Verde Airlines and BestFly Cabo Verde (45–50 minutes flight time). From VXE, take a 15-minute taxi (1,000 CVE / $10 USD) to the ferry terminal in Mindelo, then take a 60-minute passenger ferry across the channel to Porto Novo on Santo Antão (operated by CV Interilhas and Fast Ferry, 800–1,000 CVE / $8–$10 USD).
By Bus
Public transit on Santo Antão relies on shared minibuses known as aluguers. At the Porto Novo ferry port, drivers assemble for every arriving ferry. Direct minibuses to Vila das Pombas run along the coastal route EN1-SA03, taking about 35 minutes and costing 300–400 CVE ($3–$4 USD) per passenger. To travel beyond Pombas into the upper valley (toward Passagem or Cabo da Ribeira), switch to an interior valley minibus for 100–150 CVE ($1–$1.50 USD).
By Train
No train service.
By Car
From the ferry terminal at Porto Novo, take the paved coastal highway EN1-SA03 north for 28 km to Vila das Pombas (35 minutes drive time). Drivers seeking dramatic views can take the older cobblestone mountain road EN1-SA01 (Estrada da Corda), which climbs past the Cova crater rim over 30 km (60–75 minutes) before descending toward the northern coast. Private taxis between Porto Novo and Pombas charge fixed fares of 2,500–3,500 CVE ($25–$35 USD). Rental cars (predominantly manual 4WD vehicles) are available in Porto Novo starting at 5,500–7,500 CVE ($55–$75 USD) per day.
- Minibuses (Aluguers): Shared vans travel up and down the single paved road running along the valley floor between Vila das Pombas and Cabo da Ribeira throughout daylight hours. Fares range from 100 to 150 CVE ($1–$1.50 USD). Flag down passing vehicles from the roadside.
- On Foot: Paved stone mule paths and stone staircases connect hamlets, terraces, and guesthouses on both sides of the gorge. Walking is often the only way to reach higher hillside dwellings.
- Taxis and Private Drivers: Private taxis operate from the main stand in Vila das Pombas. Full-day charters for trailhead drop-offs (such as Cova crater) or island tours cost 3,000–5,000 CVE ($30–$50 USD).
- Ride-Hailing: No app-based ride services (such as Uber or Bolt) operate on Santo Antão.

Hike the Cova to Paúl Valley Trail: Descend from the crater rim of Cova down a steep switchback path into the valley floor at Cabo da Ribeira. The 8 km trail drops roughly 1,000 meters in elevation, takes 3 to 4 hours, and offers views across the northern coast.
Sample Grogue and Ponche at Local Distilleries: Tour active trapiches like Trapiche de Manuel or O Curral between January and May to observe sugarcane pressing, fermentation, and copper-pot distillation, followed by tastings of clear grogue and fruit-infused ponche.
Hike Along the Levadas: Follow stone water channels from Cabo da Ribeira through Chã de Manuel dos Santos to view mountain farming practices, coffee plots, and breadfruit groves.
