Fontainhas
Ilhas de Barlavento, Cabo Verde
Why visit Fontainhas?
Fontainhas is a spectacular cliffside village on the northern coast of the island of Santo Antão, Cabo Verde. Perched dramatically on the edge of a deep ravine, the village consists of colorful pastel-painted houses that appear to cling to the steep volcanic cliffs, set against the backdrop of terraced crops and the crashing waves of the Atlantic Ocean below. In 2015, National Geographic highlighted the village for having one of the most beautiful views in the world, making it a dream destination for photographers and hikers.
The village is small, with a population of only a few dozen families whose livelihoods depend on agriculture. Crops such as sugarcane, yams, and bananas are grown on narrow, hand-built stone terraces climbing up the ravine walls, irrigated by traditional gravity-fed water channels (levadas). The climate is sub-tropical and dry, with refreshing sea breezes. Visitors come here to witness the dramatic fusion of human settlement and extreme topography.

By Plane
There is no airport on Santo Antão. The nearest airport is Cesária Évora Airport (VXE) on neighboring São Vicente island. Visitors fly to VXE, take a taxi (~1000 CVE) to Mindelo's port, and board a 1-hour ferry (~800 CVE) to Porto Novo on Santo Antão.
By Car / Road
Fontainhas is located about 4 km west of the town of Ponta do Sol. A narrow, steep, and winding cobblestone road connects the two settlements. You can hire a private taxi or 4x4 from Ponta do Sol (~1000 CVE) to drive you to the village, which takes about 15 minutes. Alternatively, many visitors choose to walk the scenic route, which takes about 1 hour on foot.
Due to its steep location and tiny size, Fontainhas is entirely explored on foot. The village has no streets for cars; instead, a network of steep stone stairways and narrow paths winds between the houses. Sturdy walking shoes are absolutely necessary. The surrounding area is accessed via hiking trails that traverse the cliffs and ravines.
