Teteven is a town on the banks of the Vit River at the foot of the Balkan Mountains in north central Bulgaria. It is the administrative centre of Teteven Municipality in Lovech Province, with a population of about 10,700. The climate is temperate continental with cold winters and cool summers. The town was first mentioned in 1421 and was a thriving city in the 16th and 17th centuries before being raided and burnt by brigands in 1801, with only four of 3,000 houses surviving. It later revived and was active in the armed struggle for Bulgarian independence.

By Plane
The nearest international airports are Sofia (SOF) about 130 km southwest and Plovdiv (PDV) about 150 km southeast. From either airport, take a bus or taxi to the central bus stations for onward connections to Teteven.
By Train
There is no direct railway station in Teteven. The nearest train stations are in Lovech or Lukovit, from which you can catch a bus or taxi to Teteven. Regional trains run from Sofia to Lovech via Levski.
By Car / Road
Teteven is accessible via the II-35 road connecting Lovech to the south and the II-37 road from the east. The town is about 110 km northeast of Sofia. Parking is available in the town centre.
The town centre of Teteven is compact and walkable. Local buses connect the main districts and nearby attractions. Taxis are available from the bus station.
