Letnitsa

Lovech, Bulgaria

Why visit Letnitsa?

Letnitsa is a small town on the Danubian Plain of Lovech Province, in central northern Bulgaria. It is best known internationally for the Letnitsa Treasure: in 1963, workers building a cowshed for the local agricultural cooperative unearthed an inverted bronze vessel roughly 50–60 cm underground containing 23 silver and gilded-silver appliqués — decorations from a Thracian horse harness, including a bridle and breastplate — dated to 385–335 BC, from the reign of the Odrysian king Cotys I. The pieces are considered among the finest examples of Thracian metalwork and are now held at the National History Museum in Sofia, not in Letnitsa itself. Letnitsa is also the administrative centre of Letnitsa Municipality, which contains the Krushuna Waterfalls, a well-known series of travertine cascades and pools near the village of Krushuna — one of the more visited natural sights in this part of Bulgaria.
