Svetlahorsk

Homieĺskaja voblasć, Belarus

Why visit Svetlahorsk?

Svetlahorsk (Svyetlahorsk, Svetlogorsk), population around 62,000, is an industrial town on the Berezina River in central Homielskaja voblasć and the administrative center of Svetlahorsk District. First recorded in 1560 under the name Shatsilki, it was renamed Svetlahorsk ("bright town") in 1961. Its economy is built on chemicals and pulp-and-paper: the town has Svetlogorsk Khimvolokno, a large synthetic-fibre chemical plant, and the Svetlogorsk Pulp and Cardboard Mill, one of the largest bleached-kraft-pulp producers in Europe and the only one of its kind in Belarus. It has a modern Soviet-era layout with green spaces along the Berezina and is nicknamed "Svietly" (the Bright) locally.
