Why visit Vasilevichy?
Vasilevichy is a small town in Rechytsa District, southern Homielskaja voblasć (Gomel Region), with a population of roughly 3,100 (2025). It lies in the Polesia lowlands on the railway line between Mazyr and Rechytsa. Within the Grand Duchy of Lithuania it belonged to the Minsk Voivodeship, and later the Rzeczyca starostwo of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth, before the Russian Empire annexed the area in 1793 during the Second Partition of Poland. A meteorological station was established here in 1884. During the Second World War, Vasilevichy was occupied by German forces from August 1941 to November 1943. The town is the birthplace of Yury Zacharanka, a former Belarusian minister of internal affairs and later opposition politician who disappeared in 1999.
