Why visit Vetka?
Vetka (Belarusian: Vietka) is a small district town of about 7,500 on the Sož River, 25 km north-east of Gomel, founded in 1685 by Russian Old Believers fleeing the Nikonian reforms of the Russian Orthodox Church. For a century and a half it was the most important Old Believer settlement in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and a centre of icon-painting, manuscript copying, and traditional Belarusian-Russian folk culture. The town was depopulated by repeated Russian punitive expeditions, but its cultural heritage was rescued and preserved in the remarkable Vetka Museum of Old Believers and Belarusian Traditions — one of the best small museums in Belarus.
Climate is continental; best visited late spring through autumn. Vetka is the country's most-rewarding short day trip from Gomel.
