Why visit Zhytkavichy?
Zhytkavichy (Zhitkovichi) is a town in western Homielskaja voblasć (Gomel Region), administrative center of Zhytkavichy District, with a population of roughly 15,800 (2025). First recorded in 1500, it remained a small settlement until the construction of the Polesskaya (Polesie) Railway in 1886 spurred growth, bringing wood-processing and agricultural industry along with it. A parochial school opened in 1872 and a zemstvo school in 1877. The settlement became part of the Byelorussian SSR on 1 January 1919, was granted urban-type-settlement status in 1938, and received official town status in 1971. It sits in the Polesian wetlands of southern Belarus, a low-lying region of marshes and river floodplains.
