Zhlobin
Homieĺskaja voblasć, Belarus
Why visit Zhlobin?
Zhlobin (Belarusian: Žlobin) is an industrial city of about 75,000 on the Dnieper River in northern Homieĺskaja voblasć, dominated by the huge Belarusian Steel Works (BMZ) that has shaped the modern town. First mentioned in 1492, Zhlobin's centre is largely a planned Soviet ensemble around the Lenin Square and the riverside park, with a couple of restored churches and a small but worthwhile regional museum. Travellers come for two reasons: it's a major rail junction on the Gomel–Minsk and Mogilev–Brest lines, and a launch-point for excursions to the unusual Krasny Bereg Estate about 25 km north — a fairy-tale neo-Gothic palace built in the 1890s for the Hatkewich family and now a museum.
Climate is continental; best visited late spring through autumn.
