Udulu

Udulu (also spelled Udullu) is a village in the Hacıqabul (Hajigabul) District of eastern Azerbaijan, on the Shirvan agricultural plain near Hacıqabul Lake. The village lies along the historic caravan routes of the Great Silk Road, and it preserves two notable heritage remains: the "Güngörməz" defensive tower, dating to the early medieval period (with related fortifications in the area traced back as far as the Bronze Age), and a caravanserai built in the 15th century on the eastern shore of Hacıqabul Lake. Hacıqabul Lake itself formed naturally as the Caspian Sea receded in an earlier geological period; it is shallow (no more than about 5 m deep), does not freeze in winter, and is an important wintering and nesting site for migratory waterfowl. Udulu is named in regional tourism material as a stop on the domestic heritage route from Hacıqabul town to Qubalı Baloğlan and Udulu, aimed at visitors interested in the district's historical monuments.
