Pirsaat

Hacıqabul, Azerbaijan

Why visit Pirsaat?

Pirsaat is a village in the Hacıqabul (Hajigabul) District of eastern Azerbaijan, on the Shirvan plain, named after the Pirsaat River that runs through the district. The Pirsaat is a real, well-documented river: it is about 199 km long with a drainage basin of roughly 2,280 km², rising in the hills near Ismayıllı and flowing down through Şamaxı and Salyan districts before reaching the Caspian Sea near the village of Xıdırlı. It is fed by snow, rain, and groundwater, and its largest tributary is the Zoğalava. Along its lower course, in Salyan District, stands the historic Pirsaatçay Xanegah (khanaqah), a Sufi religious lodge complex; the village of Çuxuryurd on the river's right bank has historically been home to a Molokan (Russian Orthodox dissenter) community. Note that the Hacıqabul district also contains a separate settlement called Pirsaatçay, in the municipality of Qubalıbalaoğlan, distinct from Pirsaat village itself.
