Why visit?

Hacıqabul Rayon is a district in central Azerbaijan, situated along the Kura River and the shores of Lake Hacıqabul — one of the largest natural lakes in the country. The district occupies a transitional zone between the Shirvan steppe and the foothills, creating a varied landscape of wetlands, dry grassland, and agricultural fields. The lake and its surrounding marshes are an important bird habitat, making Hacıqabul a destination for nature enthusiasts.

The district capital, Hacıqabul, is a small town on the Baku–Tbilisi highway, serving primarily as a transit point. The wider district is agricultural, with livestock, grain, and cotton as the main products. Lake Hacıqabul (also known as Mughan Lake) is the star attraction — a large, shallow lake that supports a rich ecosystem of waterbirds, fish, and aquatic plants.

Climate is semi-arid continental: hot summers (30–36 °C), mild winters (1–7 °C), and low rainfall. The lake moderates temperatures locally, and the wetlands are at their most vibrant in spring.

When is the best time to visit?

March through May is the best season, when the lake and wetlands are full, migratory birds are present, and temperatures are comfortable (15–25 °C). Autumn (September–October) is also pleasant. Summer is hot but the lake provides a cooling effect. Winter is cold and windy, with the lake at its lowest level.
