Mahmudlu

Cəbrayıl, Azerbaijan

Why visit Mahmudlu?

Mahmudlu is a village in the Cəbrayıl district of southwestern Azerbaijan, located about 20 km west of the district capital Jabrayil. Before the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, it was a modest agricultural community in the Lesser Caucasus foothills. The village was occupied in 1993, destroyed, and remained abandoned until Azerbaijani forces recaptured the district in 2020. Reconstruction has begun, but the village is still largely in ruins, with only limited infrastructure restored.

The climate is continental: warm summers (28–34 °C) and cold winters (–5 to 5 °C), with moderate precipitation that supports the green hillsides. Spring and early autumn are the best times to visit.

What are the things to do?

  • Village Ruins — The empty shells of houses, schools, and farm buildings overgrown with vegetation tell the story of the conflict.

  • Hillside Landscapes — The village sits in a valley with green slopes rising on either side, typical of the Lesser Caucasus borderland.

  • New Memorial Markers — Small plaques and flags placed by returnees and military units mark the liberation.

  • Walk the surrounding ridges for panoramic views of the Cəbrayıl district and the Iranian borderlands to the south.

  • Visit the Khatun Arch (nearby) — a natural rock formation in the mountainous area southwest of Mahmudlu.
