Jabrayil
Cəbrayıl, Azerbaijan
Why visit Jabrayil?
Jabrayil is a small town in southwestern Azerbaijan, serving as the administrative centre of the Cəbrayıl District. Located in the foothills of the Lesser Caucasus, approximately 350 km southwest of Bakı and 15 km north of the Iranian border, the town was completely destroyed and depopulated during the First Nagorno-Karabakh War in 1993 and remained under Armenian occupation for 27 years before being recaptured by Azerbaijani forces in 2020. Since then, Jabrayil has been a focus of post-war reconstruction, with new administrative buildings, infrastructure, and residential blocks being built. The town currently has a small but growing population of returnees and construction workers.
The climate is continental: hot summers (30–35 °C) and cold winters (–5 to 5 °C) with moderate precipitation. Spring and autumn are the most comfortable times to visit.

By Plane
The nearest major airport is Ganja International Airport (GNJ), about 200 km northwest. Alternatively, Bakı's Heydar Aliyev International Airport (GYD) is 350 km northeast. From Ganja, a taxi to Jabrayil takes about 2.5–3 hours and costs 100–150 AZN.
By Train
The nearest railway station is in Horadiz, approximately 30 km north. The Bakı–Horadiz train service resumed after the 2020 war. From Horadiz, a taxi to Jabrayil costs 15–20 AZN.
By Car / Road
From Bakı, take the M3 highway south toward Horadiz, then continue southwest to Jabrayil. The journey is about 350 km and takes 4–5 hours. Marshrutka services are limited but expanding as reconstruction progresses.
Jabrayil is small enough to walk around, though the ongoing reconstruction means roads can be dusty and uneven. For trips to nearby villages or to the border area, a taxi is essential.
What are the things to do?
Jabrayil Reconstruction — The building site that is the current town centre is itself a sight: new government buildings, residential blocks, and roads rising from the ruins, symbolising Azerbaijan's post-war recovery.
War Ruins — The remains of pre-war buildings, including a mosque with its minaret still standing amidst rubble, are preserved as a memorial to the destruction of war.
Jabrayil Fortress — Ruins of a medieval fortress on a hill overlooking the town, dating to the 15th–16th centuries.
Iran Border Views — The nearby frontier (about 15 km south) offers views across the Araz River into Iran.
Visit the Jabrayil Memorial Complex — a new museum and monument dedicated to the town's history and the 2020 liberation.
Observe the reconstruction effort — the town is a living construction site, with workers from across Azerbaijan rebuilding homes and infrastructure.
Hike in the surrounding foothills — the landscape of rolling green hills and river valleys is markedly different from the flat plains of central Azerbaijan.
