Karkhulu

Cəbrayıl, Azerbaijan

Why visit Karkhulu?

Karkhulu is a village in the Cəbrayıl district of southwestern Azerbaijan, located approximately 25 km west of Jabrayil town, near the border with the Gubadlı district. The village sits in the valley of a tributary of the Araz River, surrounded by the green foothills of the Lesser Caucasus. Like all settlements in the district, it was occupied in 1993 and recaptured in 2020, and was heavily damaged during the decades of conflict and neglect.

The climate is continental with moderate rainfall: warm summers (28–34 °C) and cold winters (–5 to 5 °C). The surrounding countryside is greener and more forested than the lowlands of central Azerbaijan.

  • River Valley Scenery — The seasonal river that flows past the village supports a ribbon of greener vegetation, contrasting with the drier hillsides.

  • Viewpoint Hills — The slopes around Karkhulu offer views across the Cəbrayıl district and into the Gubadlı region.

  • Hike the valley — the riverbed and hillside paths are suitable for walking (watch for loose stones and minefield warning signs — stick to cleared areas).

  • Combine a visit with the nearby Gubadlı district for a broader view of the post-war Karabakh region.

  • Birdwatch — the valley attracts raptors, including buzzards and occasional eagles.
