Bərdə Rayon is a lowland district in central Azerbaijan, centred on the ancient city of Bərdə, one of the oldest continuously inhabited settlements in the South Caucasus. The rayon stretches across the fertile Kura-Araz lowland, with the Kura River forming its northern boundary. The landscape is predominantly flat agricultural land — wheat fields, orchards, and cotton plantations — punctuated by stands of willow and poplar along irrigation canals.
Bərdə city was once the capital of Caucasian Albania and later a major Silk Road trading post. While little of its former grandeur survives above ground, archaeological sites and historical references give the district a depth of heritage that belies its modest modern appearance. The city today is a regional administrative centre with tree-lined streets, a central bazaar, and a relaxed provincial atmosphere.
The climate is continental — hot, dry summers (32–38 °C) and cool winters (0–8 °C) with occasional frost. Rainfall is low, concentrated in spring and autumn. The flat terrain makes cycling and driving easy, but summer heat can be oppressive for outdoor exploration.
When is the best time to visit?
April through May and September through October are the best months, with comfortable temperatures (15–25 °C) and manageable conditions for sightseeing. Summer (June–August) is very hot and best avoided for extensive outdoor activity. Winter (December–February) is cold but rarely severe. Novruz (around 21 March) brings festive celebrations across the district's towns and villages.

WhatsAppHow do you get around?
Bərdə city is connected to Baku (280 km east, 3.5 hours by car) via the M2 highway. Regular buses and marshrutkas run to Baku, Ganja, Yevlax, and other regional centres. Within the rayon, local minibuses connect Bərdə city to surrounding villages. Taxis are affordable — 5–10 AZN for trips within the district. The Baku–Tbilisi railway passes through nearby Yevlax (25 km north), which has a main-line station. Roads within the rayon are mostly paved but secondary village roads may be unpaved.

WhatsAppWhat should you eat?
Bərdə's cuisine reflects its agricultural setting. Fresh produce — tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, and herbs — features prominently in local dishes. Plov (saffron rice with lamb and dried fruits) is the signature celebratory meal. Qovurma (preserved lamb in its own fat) is a regional specialty suited to the continental climate. The bazaar sells fresh bread baked in traditional tandir (clay ovens), local honey, and seasonal fruits. Dovga (yogurt and herb soup) is a refreshing staple in summer. Meals in local restaurants cost 5–10 AZN.
What is the culture like?
Bərdə's cultural heritage is deep but understated. Novruz (around 21 March) is the main festival, celebrated with bonfires, festive sweets, and public gatherings. The city's bazaar remains the social and commercial heart of the district. Ashiq bards perform traditional music in tea houses, and local wedding celebrations feature elaborate multi-day feasting. The district has a tradition of carpet-weaving in geometric lowland patterns, though production has declined.
