Ağsu (Aghsu) is a rayon (district) of central Azerbaijan, set on the Shirvan plain where the southern foothills of the Greater Caucasus descend toward the lowland. It takes its name from the Aghsu River, and the rayon centre, the town of Aghsu, sits on the old route between the mountain town of Shamakhi and the plains, crossed by the scenic Aghsu Pass.
The district's signature site is Old Aghsu (Köhnə Ağsu), the archaeological remains of a walled medieval and early-modern town that served for a time as a capital of the Shirvan region before the present settlement was founded in the early 19th century. Today an open-air archaeological park preserves its foundations, baths and workshops. Around it spreads fertile agricultural country — pomegranate orchards, vineyards, wheat and orchards — for which the Shirvan zone is well known.
For travellers, Ağsu is a quiet rural district most often experienced in passing between Baku, Shamakhi and the central regions, but it rewards a stop for its archaeology, its pass-top views and its farm produce.
When is the best time to visit?
Spring (April–May) and autumn (September–October) are the best seasons — mild temperatures, green hills in spring, and the harvest (especially pomegranates) in autumn. The Aghsu Pass and the foothill scenery are at their most attractive in these shoulder months.
Summer (June–August) is hot and dry on the plain, while winter (December–February) is cold with occasional snow on the higher ground toward Shamakhi. Autumn is the most rewarding time for food and markets, when the orchards and vineyards come in.

WhatsAppHow do you get around?
Aghsu lies roughly 2–2.5 hours west of Baku (about 170 km) and is easily reached on the route toward Shamakhi, which is the nearest larger town and a natural pairing for a visit. Intercity buses and shared taxis (marshrutkas) run from Baku's western bus terminals toward Shamakhi and Aghsu.
Within the rayon, local taxis are the practical way to reach the villages and Old Aghsu, and a car is best for combining the district with the Aghsu Pass and Shamakhi's monuments. The pass road itself, climbing through switchbacks into the foothills, is one of the more scenic drives in central Azerbaijan.
Where should you go?
- Aghsu — the rayon centre on the Shirvan plain, gateway to the Old Aghsu archaeological park and the surrounding orchards.
- Bico — a rural village in the rayon's farming country amid vineyards and orchards.
- Nuran — a small settlement on the plain, part of the district's agricultural belt.
- Padar — a village in the Shirvan lowland, surrounded by pomegranate and grain fields.

WhatsAppWhat should you eat?
Ağsu's food is classic Shirvan-region Azerbaijani country fare, built on the district's farm produce. Pomegranates are the local emblem — eaten fresh, pressed into the tart syrup narsharab that accompanies grilled meat and fish, and celebrated across the region's autumn tables. Local grapes and orchard fruit feature in preserves, compotes and wines.
Expect hearty plov (pilaf), dolma (stuffed vine leaves and vegetables), bozbash (lamb-and-chickpea soup), and grilled kebabs served with flatbread, fresh herbs and tomatoes. Bread baked in a təndir clay oven, sheep's-milk cheeses and honey from the foothills round out the rural menu, best sampled at family-run roadside eateries.
What is the culture like?
The rayon's identity is tied to the Shirvan historical region and its long urban heritage, embodied by Old Aghsu and the nearby cultural centre of Shamakhi. Traditional crafts of the area include carpet weaving and silk, part of the broader Shirvan textile tradition, alongside the everyday rhythms of farming and orcharding.
The national spring festival of Nowruz (around 20–21 March) is the year's great celebration, with bonfires, sweets such as shekerbura and pakhlava, and communal gatherings. The autumn harvest, and the pomegranate season in particular, is the district's most distinctive local moment, marked informally across the villages and at regional fairs.
