Muxima
Bengo, Angola
Why visit Muxima?
Muxima is a historic town in Bengo Province, situated on the Kwanza River about 100 km southeast of Luanda. Its name means "heart" in Kimbundu. The town's centrepiece is the Fortress of Nossa Senhora da Muxima (Our Lady of Muxima), a 17th-century Portuguese fortress-church that is one of Angola's most important religious landmarks. Every year in late August and early September, tens of thousands of Catholic pilgrims walk from Luanda to Muxima for the Feast of Our Lady of Muxima on 8 September — the country's largest religious pilgrimage. The town itself is small and quiet for most of the year, with the river and the fortress defining its character. The climate follows Bengo's coastal pattern: a mild dry season from May to October and a rainy season from November to April.
