Sispony

La Massana, Andorra

Why visit Sispony?

Sispony is a small village in La Massana parish, Andorra, on a sunny terrace about 1,320 m above the right bank of the Valira del Nord river, ~3 km south of the parish capital and ~9 km north of Andorra la Vella. It is one of the seven quarts of La Massana, with a few hundred permanent residents.

Sispony's special claim on the visitor is Casa Rull, one of Andorra's most important ethnographic museums: a restored 17th–19th-century casa pairal (ancestral home) that belonged to one of the parish's wealthiest farming families. The house was donated to the state and opened in 2000 as a museum showing pre-industrial Pyrenean rural life — the kitchen, parlour, granary, stable, and tobacco-curing rooms are presented as they would have been in the late 19th century. The Romanesque-origin parish chapel Sant Joan de Sispony sits on the edge of the village.

Best time to visit: late spring through early autumn for the museum and surrounding walks. The museum closes for short maintenance periods; check with the Patrimoni Cultural of Andorra.

What are the things to do?

  • Casa Rull — Restored 17th–19th-century farmhouse-museum showing pre-industrial Pyrenean rural life — kitchen, hearth, dovecote, stable, tobacco-curing room and family chapel. Guided visits typically every 30 min in season, conducted in Catalan / Spanish / French / English. Modest entry fee (around €5).

  • Església de Sant Joan de Sispony — Romanesque-origin parish chapel with a small bell-cot. Free; irregular hours.

  • Pic d'Enclar viewpoint — The village's south-facing position gives long views across the valley to the Enclar massif.

  • Traditional bordes on the village edge — Several restored hay barns illustrate the parish's vernacular architecture.

  • Visit Casa Rull — Allow 1–1.5 hr for the guided visit. The best ethnographic experience in the country alongside Casa d'Areny-Plandolit in Ordino.

  • Walk the trail to Anyós and back — Pleasant 1–2 hr loop on signposted paths through pine and meadow.

  • Combine with the Comic Museum and Casa d'Areny-Plandolit — Half-day "museums of La Massana / Ordino" itinerary.

  • Picnic at the Sispony viewpoint — South-facing, lovely in summer.
