Arinsal

La Massana, Andorra

Why visit Arinsal?

Arinsal is a ski village in La Massana parish, Andorra, sitting in a steep dead-end side valley at about 1,550 m, ~6 km northwest of the parish capital. With a permanent population in the low hundreds it is one of Andorra's main ski bases — together with Pal across the ridge it forms the Vallnord Pal-Arinsal domain, the country's second-largest ski area after Grandvalira.

Arinsal has long had a particular relationship with British and Irish ski markets — the resort's English-language ski school and Anglo-friendly pub scene have made it one of the most popular Andorran destinations for first-time skiers from the UK and Ireland. Architecturally it is much more modern and resort-driven than the neighbouring traditional village of Pal: a strip of hotels, apartments and bars climbs the lower valley to the cable-car base at La Massana–Arinsal interlink, with the village's older nucleus and Romanesque chapel slightly aside.

Above the village the valley closes into the Comapedrosa Natural Park, surrounding Andorra's highest peak — the Pic de Coma Pedrosa (2,942 m), a classic full-day summer climb from Arinsal with an overnight option at the Refugi de Comapedrosa.

Best time to visit: December–April for skiing, June–September for high-mountain hiking.

  • Climb Pic de Coma Pedrosa — Full-day strenuous hike (8–10 hr round trip) with ~1,400 m of ascent. Overnight at Refugi de Comapedrosa (guarded, summer staffed) makes the climb easier. Snow can linger into June.

  • Mountain biking — Vallnord-Bike Park Pal-Arinsal trails accessed by lift in summer.

  • Snowshoeing — Easy routes from Arinsal up toward the Borda de Sorteny in winter; guided trips through local operators.

  • Après-ski — A British-driven scene of pubs and late bars (Quo Vadis, Surf, Anyos Pal).
