Les Escaldes
Escaldes-Engordany, Andorra
Why visit Les Escaldes?
Les Escaldes — usually shortened to Escaldes and the principal urban centre of the parish of Escaldes-Engordany — is a small town immediately east of Andorra la Vella, at about 1,053 m on the right bank of the Valira d'Orient river. With the capital and the rest of the parish it forms a single continuous urban area of around 28,500 people. The name comes from les escaldes, "the hot springs," referring to the highly sulphurous and nitrogenous waters (22–66 °C) that emerge here and have been the basis of the town's identity for centuries.
Until the late 20th century the hot springs supplied a series of public bathhouses and small spa hotels; since 1994 they have been the basis of the country's defining piece of contemporary tourist architecture, the Caldea / Inúu thermal-leisure complex, whose 80 m glass spire (designed by French architect Jean-Michel Ruols with Ferran Pons) is the icon of modern Andorra. Around Caldea, Les Escaldes is the densest section of the country's duty-free retail strip — the Avinguda Carlemany runs through here as one continuous boulevard of perfume, fashion and electronics shops.
Older pockets around the Plaça Coprínceps and the Romanesque-origin parish church of Sant Pere Màrtir preserve the original village fabric; the rest of Les Escaldes is mostly 1970s–90s urban density.
Best time to visit: year-round given the indoor spa and shopping.
