Engordany
Escaldes-Engordany, Andorra
Why visit Engordany?
Engordany is the older, eastern quarter of the parish of Escaldes-Engordany in Andorra, set on the right bank of the Valira d'Orient river at about 1,109 m, immediately east of Les Escaldes and at the foot of the Pic de Padern (1,861 m). The two quarters Les Escaldes and Engordany give the parish its compound name, but Engordany is much smaller and quieter than its western neighbour, preserving a recognisable older core of stone houses, several Romanesque chapels, and a more village-like atmosphere.
The historical centrepiece is the Pont d'Engordany, a slender medieval stone bridge over the Valira d'Orient, and the Romanesque-origin parish church of Sant Miquel d'Engordany with its characteristic Lombard bell tower. The wider quarter also includes the small dependent settlements of Els Vilars d'Engordany to the north and El Fener further upstream.
For visitors, Engordany works as a quieter walking and dining alternative to busy Les Escaldes — same parish, same spa-and-shopping convenience, but with traditional stone-and-slate streets and the river running through.
Best time to visit: year-round; the older fabric is particularly attractive in spring and autumn.
