Els Vilars d'Engordany
Escaldes-Engordany, Andorra
Why visit Els Vilars d'Engordany?
Els Vilars d'Engordany (commonly known as Els Vilars) is an elevated village and exclusive residential area situated in the parish of Escaldes-Engordany, Andorra. Located on the sunny southern slopes of the mountain range overlooking the Gran Valira river valley, it offers some of the most spectacular panoramic views of the contiguous urban area of Andorra la Vella and Escaldes-Engordany. Historically a small agricultural hamlet, it has transformed into a prestigious enclave featuring high-end villas and contemporary mountain architecture.
The climate is temperate Pyrenean, with mild summers and cold winters that see occasional snowfall. Its elevated position makes it slightly cooler than the valley floor during the peak of summer, while capturing plenty of daily sunshine. It is a peaceful destination suitable for travelers who want to stay close to Andorra's main urban attractions while enjoying quiet, natural surroundings.

Els Vilars is accessed via the Carretera dels Vilars (CS-101), which winds upwards from the main CG-1 and CG-2 highways in the valley floor of Escaldes-Engordany. It is a short 5-to-10-minute drive (approx. 2–3 km) from the center of Escaldes-Engordany. Driving from Barcelona takes about 2.5 hours via the C-16 and N-145.

The local parish bus system (Línia d'Escaldes) has routes connecting Els Vilars to the center of Escaldes-Engordany. Taxis are also readily available, costing around €7–€10 from the main shopping avenues to the village.
What are the things to do?
Església de Sant Romà dels Vilars: The centerpiece of the village's cultural heritage is this pre-Romanesque chapel. Dating back to the 10th century, it is one of the oldest churches in Andorra. Built of rough local stone, it features a rectangular nave, a semi-circular apse, and a small double-arched bell gable. It represents the simple, early medieval religious architecture of the Pyrenees.
Panoramic Views: The streets of Els Vilars provide excellent vantage points overlooking the commercial district of Escaldes-Engordany, the Caldea thermal spa tower, and the surrounding mountains.
Walking and Hiking: Several trails lead from Els Vilars further up the mountain slopes toward the Madriu-Perafita-Claror Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The paths are popular for morning jogs and nature walks.
Thermal Spa: While the thermal waters are utilized down in the town center, a short trip down to Caldea (approx. 2 km away) is the classic activity for anyone staying in the area.
