Why visit Karaburun-Sazan Marine National Park?

Karaburun-Sazan Marine National Park (Parku Kombëtar Detar Karaburun-Sazan) is Albania's first and only marine national park, located in Vlorë County in southwestern Albania. Established in 2010, the park covers a marine area of 12,428 hectares, encompassing the waters surrounding the rugged Karaburun Peninsula and the strategically positioned Sazan Island at the entrance to the Bay of Vlorë.

The park is a wild, undeveloped region characterized by dramatic limestone cliffs, hidden coves, pristine beaches, and underwater caves. Historically, Sazan Island served as a highly fortified military base during the Cold War, featuring thousands of bunkers, tunnels, and military ruins. The island was closed to the public for decades and was only opened to tourists in 2015. The marine reserve protects a diverse ecosystem, including Loggerhead sea turtles, dolphins, monk seals, and extensive meadows of Posidonia oceanica seagrass.

The climate is Mediterranean with hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters. The park is only accessible during the tourist season, typically from May to October, when boat excursions run from the mainland.
