Konispol
Vlore, Albania
Why visit Konispol?
Konispol is a small town of around 1,500 in the far south of Vlorë County, set in the hills above the Pavllo plain about 30 km south of Sarandë and just 6 km from the Greek border at Qafë Botë. It is Albania's southernmost town of any size — the road south of Konispol drops into the Pavllo and the border crossing into Thesprotia, Greece. The surrounding area is one of the most distinctly Greek-Albanian Orthodox parts of the country, with historical ties to the Çamëri (Tsamouria) region of north-western Greece. The town centre is modest, but the Konispol Caves in the hills above (with archaeological evidence of human occupation going back tens of thousands of years) and the Stillo cape to the south-west (Albania's southernmost point) give it niche appeal.
For travellers, Konispol is mostly a border-area stop or a side-trip from Sarandë for visitors interested in Albania's southernmost point and the prehistory of the Konispol caves. The hill setting, the olive groves and the quiet villages of the Pavllo plain are pleasant.
Climate: warm Mediterranean — hot dry summers, mild damp winters.
