Selenicë
Vlore, Albania
Why visit Selenicë?
Selenicë is a small town of around 6,500 in Vlorë County, south-western Albania, set in the hills about 20 km east of Vlorë. It is best known for its bitumen mines — the surrounding deposit is one of the largest and oldest natural-bitumen extractions in the world, worked since antiquity (Roman, Venetian and Ottoman records reference Selenicë bitumen). The mine has shaped the town's character: from communist-era industrial complex to its current quieter operation, the layered industrial landscape and small mining museum give Selenicë a distinct identity quite unlike the coastal towns just west.
For travellers, Selenicë is a niche stop on the inland route from Vlorë toward Tepelenë or Mallakastër, with appeal mostly for visitors interested in industrial heritage, geology, and slow drives through southern Albanian hill country.
Climate: warm Mediterranean — hot dry summers, mild damp winters.
