Orikum

Orikum is a small coastal town of around 5,000 in Vlorë County, southern Albania, set at the southern end of Vlora Bay about 18 km south of the city of Vlorë and at the foot of the Llogara pass. It is one of the oldest settlements on the Albanian coast: the ancient Greek port of Oricum (Ωρικός) was founded around the 7th century BC and served as the southern harbour of Illyria, played a notable role in Julius Caesar's 48 BC pursuit of Pompey, and survives today as a partially excavated archaeological park inside the modern Albanian naval base area (visit by arrangement / guided tour).

For travellers, modern Orikum is mostly known as the last beach resort before the Llogara pass and the spectacular Albanian Riviera further south — its long pebble-and-sand beach, good seafood restaurants, and slightly cheaper hotels than Vlorë centre make it a sensible base. The Llogara National Park rises steeply behind, and the Karaburun peninsula stretches across the bay to the north — both directly accessible from Orikum.

Climate: hot Mediterranean — summers 30–34°C with sea ~24–26°C in July–August. Best months May–June and September–October; July–August are busy.

From Vlorë ~18 km (25 min) south on SH8; from Llogara pass ~20 km (30 min) south; from Himarë ~50 km (1h15m) over Llogara; from Tirana ~165 km (2h30m). Frequent buses link Orikum with Vlorë.

The seafront strip is walkable. To reach Karaburun (by boat) or Llogara (by car) you need a transfer or hired car.

• Ancient Orikum archaeological park — ruins of the Greek-Roman city inside the naval base perimeter; visit by guided tour from Vlorë.

• Orikum beach — long pebble-and-sand bay south of Vlorë's main strip.

• Marina di Orikum — small yacht marina, departure point for boat trips.

• Karaburun Peninsula (across the bay) — Albania's largest protected sea area, with Haxhi Aliu Cave (massive sea cave) and remote pebble coves.

• Sazan Island — former Cold War military island, opened to visitors as part of Karaburun-Sazan park.

• Llogara National Park — pine-forest park on the pass behind the town.

• Pasha Liman naval base — historical military area on the headland (exterior only).

• Boat trips to Karaburun and Sazan from Orikum marina — full-day trips ~€30–50.

• Beach days at Orikum or the smaller Radhimë coves north.

• Drive or paraglide from the Llogara pass for the headline coastal views.

• Half-day to Vlorë for the Independence Museum.

• Hike in Llogara National Park — pine forests and panoramic ridges.

Seafood is the obvious choice.

• Restorant Marina — at the marina, fresh seafood; mains 1,000–2,000 lekë.
• Te Aldo / Te Marku — long-running seafront fish restaurants.
• Restorant Orikum — central, traditional menu.

Try grilled fish, mussels, prawns and octopus.

Cafés and beach bars along the seafront. Korça beer, Albanian wines and raki dominate. Bottled water recommended.

• Budget: small guesthouses and short-stay rooms ~€25–45 in season.
• Mid-range: several three-star seafront hotels — Orikum Resort, Hotel Marina; doubles ~€60–110 in season.
• Upscale / heritage: Marina Marriott Vacation Club at Orikum and a couple of higher-end resorts; doubles ~€150–300 in peak season.

Local olive oil, raki and honey from the surrounding villages. Souvenir shops on the seafront.
