Why visit Finiq?

Finiq is a small town and municipality located in the Vlorë County of southern Albania, situated approximately 10–12 km east of the coastal city of Sarandë. Historically known as Phoenice (or Phoeniki), it holds vast cultural and archaeological importance as the ancient capital of the Chaonians, a powerful Greek tribe of Epirus. The ancient city flourished from the 5th century BC through the Hellenistic, Roman, and Byzantine periods, acting as a major political and economic hub. It is famously the location where the Treaty of Phoenice was signed in 205 BC, which brought a temporary end to the First Macedonian War between Rome and Macedonia.

Today, Finiq is a tranquil rural enclave that draws history buffs and nature lovers seeking to escape the crowded beaches of the Albanian Riviera. The main draw is the Finiq Archaeological Park, situated on a hill overlooking the modern municipality and offering stunning 360-degree views of the Bistrica valley and the Vrina plains. The climate is typically Mediterranean, characterized by hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters. The best time to visit is during the spring (April to June) and autumn (September to October) when temperatures are pleasant for walking through the open-air ruins. Summer can be intensely hot, and the exposed hilltop offers very little shade.

The modern municipality of Finiq is composed of several small villages scattered around the hills and plains, with Mesopotam and the archaeological park being the key zones of interest for travelers.
