Imperial Vienna, Tyrolean glaciers and Swiss lakes — all on rails, one Schengen visa
View Day-by-DayThe whole route runs on scenic inter-city trains — no internal flights and no long drives — and a single Schengen visa covers both Austria and Switzerland. Only the two Tyrolean day trips (Hintertux and Achensee) use a self-drive rental car.
June in the Alps is unpredictable — Innsbruck and Central Switzerland both average 16–20 rainy days. Expect dramatic green mountain scenery and ~16 hours of daylight. Pack a proper waterproof, a warm fleece and sturdy walking shoes; a beanie and gloves help for the Hintertux glacier day, which stays at 0°C inside the ice palace year-round.
A booster seat is required by Austrian law for the 7-year-old in the rental car. Bring a packable booster from home (~₹2,500) or add one at pickup (~€30 flat, ~₹3,400).
The Mt Pilatus day is best swapped to a clear-sky window if the forecast looks unsettled. Indoor backups near St Gallen include the Stiftsbibliothek and the Textilmuseum.
