Austria is an Alpine country at the heart of Central Europe, famous for imperial Vienna, the Salzburg birthplace of Mozart, the Alpine landscapes of Tyrol, and world-class skiing. The country blends Habsburg grandeur — Baroque palaces, coffeehouses, classical music — with dramatic mountain scenery and outdoor adventure. It consistently ranks among the world's highest quality-of-life countries.
Geography & Climate
The Alps cover 62% of Austria, with the highest peak at Großglockner (3,798 m). The remaining area is the Danube basin and the eastern Pannonian plain. The climate is Alpine in the west (cool summers, heavy winter snow) and continental in the east (warmer summers, colder winters). Summer temperatures: 20–30°C in Vienna, 10–20°C in the mountains.

Culture & Etiquette
Austrians are formal and proper. Greetings: handshake with direct eye contact, use titles (Herr/Frau + surname) until invited to use first names. Punctuality is sacred. The coffeehouse culture is UNESCO intangible heritage — order a Melange and linger. Tipping 5–10% in restaurants. Remove shoes in private homes. Avoid the old east Austrian vs. west rivalries.
