Mutare

Manicaland, Zimbabwe

About Mutare

Mutare is the third-largest city in Zimbabwe and the capital of Manicaland Province, situated at the eastern end of the country just 8 km from the Mozambique border. The city is perched on Christmas Pass (1,120 m), the escarpment crossing that marks the gateway to the Eastern Highlands. Founded as Fort Umtali in 1890, Mutare was rebuilt following its destruction by the 1896 revolt and again after a fire in 1898. Today it is a vibrant commercial centre serving the region's mining, timber, and agricultural industries, and the main transit point for freight to and from the Mozambican port of Beira. Its setting on the eastern slopes of the highlands gives it a pleasant climate and makes it the natural base for exploring the Bvumba Mountains, Nyanga, and Chimanimani.

How to reach

By Plane

Mutare does not have a commercial airport. The nearest major airport is Harare's Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport (HRE), 260 km west (3 hours by road).

By Train

The railway line from Harare to Mutare primarily carries freight. Passenger services on National Railways of Zimbabwe remain suspended.

By Car / Road

Mutare lies on the A3 highway from Harare (260 km, 3 hours), a well-maintained sealed road. The city is 8 km from Forbes Border Post, the main road crossing into Mozambique (connecting to Beira, 280 km). Minibus kombis and buses (Bravo, Intercape) run regularly from Harare's Roadport, fare approximately US$5–8, journey time 3–4 hours.

Mutare's city centre is compact and walkable. Minibus kombis serve the suburbs and connect to Penhalonga (10 km northeast, 15 minutes) and the Bvumba turnoff. Taxis are available for US$2–5 for trips within the city. For Nyanga (90 km north, 1.5 hours) and Chimanimani (130 km south, 2.5 hours), private hire or minibus is the main option.
