Overview

Manicaland is Zimbabwe's easternmost province, embracing the mountainous Eastern Highlands along the border with Mozambique. Its landscape rises from the Highveld to Mount Nyangani, Zimbabwe's highest peak at 2,592 m, and includes the dramatic Chimanimani and Bvumba mountain ranges, deep river valleys, and mist-shrouded forests. The provincial capital is Mutare, the country's third-largest city. Manicaland is Zimbabwe's premier destination for hiking, trout fishing, mountain scenery, and cool-climate escapes, offering a complete contrast to the savannah and bushveld of the rest of the country.

When to Visit

The best time is the dry winter months from April to September, when skies are clear, days are mild (20–25°C), and hiking trails are in the best condition. The rainy season (November–March) brings mists, leeches on trails, and swollen rivers but also spectacular greenery. September and October are hot and dry. Mutare's annual show and agricultural fair takes place in September.

Getting Around

The main highway (A3) connects Harare to Mutare (260 km, 3 hours), then continues to the Mozambique border at Forbes Border Post. From Mutare, secondary roads lead north to Nyanga (90 km, 1.5 hours) and south to Chimanimani (130 km, 2.5 hours) and Chipinge (165 km, 3 hours). Minibus kombis and buses run regularly along these routes. A 4WD is recommended for the mountain roads in Chimanimani and the Bvumba. Taxis and private hires are available in Mutare.

Cuisine

Manicaland's highland climate supports dairy farming, trout fishing, and fruit orchards. Nyanga is famous for its fresh trout, served grilled or smoked at lodges and restaurants. The tea plantations of Chipinge produce quality black teas. Sadza remains the staple, but local specialities include mutton stews, roasted maize, and fruit preserves from the abundant orchards.

Culture & Festivals

Manicaland is predominantly Shona-speaking, with the Manyika dialect prevalent around Mutare and the Ndau dialect in Chipinge. Traditional music, dance, and craftwork remain strong. The Mutare Museum has exhibits on the region's geology, history, and culture. The Nyanga area has a strong colonial-era legacy of homesteads, trout-fishing clubs, and pine plantations that blend with indigenous traditions.
