Lap Vo

Lap Vo is a rural district in eastern Dong Thap province, situated along the northern bank of the Tien River. The district is predominantly agricultural, known for its rice production, fruit orchards, and freshwater fisheries. Life follows the rhythms of the river and the rice cycle, with flooded fields in the wet season and golden harvests in the dry months.

The climate is tropical monsoon: a dry season from December to April and a rainy season from May to November. The flood season (August-November) brings the Tien River over its banks, fertilising the fields but also limiting road access in some areas. The most pleasant months are December through February.

The district town of Lap Vo is a quiet market centre, and the surrounding countryside consists of villages strung along canals, with traditional stilt houses and small Buddhist temples.

Can Tho International Airport (VCA) is about 100 km south, a 2-hour drive. Tan Son Nhat Airport (SGN) in Ho Chi Minh City is about 130 km east, a 2.5-hour drive.

By Car / Road

Lap Vo is accessible by road from Cao Lanh (35 km east, 45 minutes by car). Buses run from Cao Lanh to Lap Vo (about 1 hour, 40,000-60,000 dong). The district is connected to neighbouring districts by a network of provincial roads.

Motorbike is the most practical transport. The district centre is walkable. During the dry season, cycling is a good option for exploring the countryside. Boat travel is the primary means of reaching some canal-side communities.

• Lap Vo Market: The central market, busy in the mornings with local produce, fish, and household goods.

• Tien River fishing villages: Stilt houses and fishing boats line the riverbank, offering a glimpse of traditional riverine life.

• Local pagodas: Several small Buddhist temples serve the farming communities, with colourful architecture and peaceful grounds.

• Rice paddies: The expansive fields are beautiful during the growing season (deep green) and at harvest time (golden).

• Boat tour on the Tien River: Explore the river and its tributaries by local boat, passing fish farms and riverside gardens.

• Cycling through the rice fields: The flat terrain and rural lanes are ideal for a leisurely bike ride.

• Visit during harvest season: Time your visit for the rice harvest (typically April-May and October-November) to see the fields in full activity.

• Fishing: Try your hand at casting nets or fishing rods with local fishermen.

• Canh chua ca: Sour soup with fish, tamarind, and fresh vegetables.
• Ca loc kho: Caramelised snakehead fish in a clay pot.
• Tom rang muot: Stir-fried shrimp with salt and pepper, a simple but flavourful dish.
• Com moi: New rice — freshly harvested rice steamed and served simply to highlight its flavour.
• Rau tap: Assorted wild vegetables from the riverbanks, served with fish.

Ca phe sua da and tra da are the standard beverages. Fresh coconut water is widely available. During the flood season, nuoc dua (coconut water) is sold from boats as well as stalls.

• Budget: Nha nghi Lap Vo — simple guesthouse in the district centre, from 150,000 dong/night.
• Mid-range: Homestay with a local farming family — some households in the district offer rooms, from 250,000 dong/night including meals.

Local produce is the main shopping draw — fresh fish, shrimp, tropical fruits, and rice. Dried fish and fish sauce from the district are high quality.

• Cao Lanh (35 km west, 45 min) — Dong Thap's capital city with markets and riverside attractions.
• Lai Vung (30 km west, 40 min) — Known for sweet mandarin oranges and orchard tours.
• Sa Dec (40 km southwest, 1 hr) — Flower villages and the house of Marguerite Duras's lover.
• Chau Thanh (35 km southwest, 50 min) — Rural district with canal boat tours.
• Can Tho (100 km south, 2.5 hr) — Mekong Delta's largest city with the Cai Rang Floating Market.
