Sa Dec
Đồng Tháp, Viet Nam
Why visit Sa Dec?
Sa Dec (officially Sa Đéc) is a city in Đồng Tháp province, renowned as the flower-growing capital of the Mekong Delta. The city's economy is built around its vast ornamental flower and plant nurseries, which supply blooms to markets across Vietnam and for export. Sa Dec gained international literary fame through Marguerite Duras's semi-autobiographical novel The Lover (1984), set partly in Sa Dec where her Chinese lover's family lived. The city's riverfront, colonial-era buildings, and quiet canals give it a gentle, old-world character.
The climate follows the Mekong Delta pattern: a dry season from December to April and a rainy season from May to November. The coolest and most comfortable months are December through February. Flower festivals often take place around Tết (Lunar New Year, usually January–February), which is the peak season for the nurseries.
The city centre clusters around the Sa Đéc Market and the Hậu River (a Mekong tributary). Notable neighbourhoods include the flower village area (làng hoa Sa Đéc) along the riverbank and the old quarter with French-era shophouses.

By Plane
Cần Thơ International Airport (VCA) is the nearest airport, about 50 km south — a 1-hour drive by taxi (400,000–600,000 đồng). Ho Chi Minh City's Tân Sơn Nhất (SGN) is about 150 km east, roughly 3 hours by road.
By Car / Road
Sa Dec is well connected by road. Buses from Ho Chi Minh City's Miền Đông station run to Sa Dec (4 hours, 150,000–200,000 đồng). Regular bus services also connect Sa Dec to Cần Thơ (1.5 hours), Cao Lãnh (30 minutes), and Long Xuyên (45 minutes). The city is accessible via National Highway 80.
The city centre is walkable. For trips to the flower villages and nurseries, renting a bicycle or motorbike is ideal. Xe ôm (motorbike taxis) are available for short hops (10,000–20,000 đồng). Boat trips along the Hậu River are a scenic way to reach outlying villages. Grab operates in Sa Dec but with limited coverage.
What are the things to do?
Sa Dec Flower Village (Làng hoa Sa Đéc): Hundreds of nurseries lining the river, growing roses, chrysanthemums, marigolds, and exotic ornamentals. Best visited in the morning before the heat. Free to walk through.
Marguerite Duras's Lover's House (Nhà cổ Huỳnh Thủy Lê): The former home of Huỳnh Thủy Lê — the Chinese lover of Duras's novel. A beautifully preserved French-colonial villa with period furniture, now a museum. Admission 20,000 đồng. Open 08:00–17:00 daily.
Sa Dec Market: A bustling market selling flowers, fresh produce, and local specialties. Particularly colourful in the lead-up to Tết.
Khu di tích Phú Điền: A historic temple complex and wartime revolutionary base with ornate Vietnamese architecture and peaceful gardens.
Vĩnh Phước Pagoda: A traditional Buddhist pagoda with a large Buddha statue and tranquil grounds.
Tour the flower nurseries: Spend a morning cycling through the flower village, watching growers tend their stock and learning about the cultivation techniques. Many nurseries sell directly to visitors.
River cruise on the Hậu River: Local operators offer 1–2 hour boat trips passing floating fish farms, riverside villages, and the flower village from the water.
Photography walk in the old quarter: The French-colonial shophouses and narrow lanes near the market are excellent for architectural photography.
Visit during Tết: The flower village is at its most spectacular in the weeks before Lunar New Year, with thousands of blossom trees and ornamental plants on display.
