The district capital lies at Ea T'ling. Following the 2025 administrative boundary changes, Cu Jut became a commune-level subdivision of Đắk Lắk province.
The name Cư Jút (or Cư M'jut in the Rhade language) means "the mountain of bamboo." The district sits in the northern part of Đắk Nông, bordering Đắk Lắk province. The landscape is characterised by basalt hills, coffee plantations, and river valleys. The climate follows the Central Highlands pattern: rainy season April–October, dry season November–March.
