Gia Nghia

Gia Nghia (Gia Nghĩa) is the capital city of Đắk Nông province in the Central Highlands of Vietnam, about 225 km from Ho Chi Minh City and 120 km from Buôn Ma Thuột. The town sits in the southwest of the Central Highlands at an elevation that gives it a pleasant, cooler climate than the coastal lowlands. Very few foreign travellers make it here, which means visitors experience an authentic slice of Vietnamese highland life in a clean, well-organised city surrounded by striking scenery.

The town is home to 19 ethnic groups, including the Ma, M'Nong, Thai, Nung, Tay, Muong, H'Mong, Khmer, Dao, Gia Rai, Hoa, San Chay, Ede, Cho Ro, San Diu, San Chi, Xe Dang, and Kinh peoples. This diversity is reflected in the local culture, festivals, and cuisine. Gia Nghia's layout is compact and walkable, centred around the main boulevards of Quang Trung and 23 Tháng 3.

The climate features a rainy season lasting from April to October (accounting for about 80% of annual rainfall) and a dry season from November to March. The driest and most comfortable months for travel are December through February.

The nearest major airport is Buôn Ma Thuột Airport (BMV), about 120 km north. Taxis from Buôn Ma Thuột to Gia Nghia cost around 1,200,000–1,500,000 dong and take 2.5–3 hours. Liên Khương Airport (DLI) near Da Lat is roughly 150 km away.

By Car / Road

Gia Nghia is 225 km from Ho Chi Minh City via National Highway 14 and 120 km from Buôn Ma Thuột. The roads are generally good sealed highways. Buses run regularly from Ho Chi Minh City's Eastern Bus Station (Bến xe Miền Đông) to Gia Nghia, taking about 5–6 hours. Buses from Buôn Ma Thuột take roughly 3 hours.

The easiest way to get around Gia Nghia is by renting a motorbike (about 150,000–200,000 dong per day) or hiring a taxi for short trips. The town centre is compact and walkable, though some sights are spread out. Ride-hailing apps like Grab are available but limited compared to larger cities.

• Three Floor Waterfall (Thác Ba Tầng) — A multi-tiered cascade surrounded by lush forest.
• Dak Nong Waterfall — A picturesque fall within easy reach of the city centre.
• Nam Nung Nature Reserve — A protected area rich in biodiversity, home to many bird species and primates. Best visited with a guide.
• Jubat Plateau — A highland area offering panoramic views of the surrounding countryside.
• Virgin Waterfall (Thác Trinh Nữ) — A lesser-known but beautiful waterfall.
• Dray Sap Waterfall — A powerful waterfall on the Krong No River, shared with Đắk Lắk province.
• Gia Long Waterfall — A popular stop with a wide cascade and picnic area.
• Lake Ea Sno — A reservoir offering boat rides and lake views.
• Krong No River — The main river of the region, with scenic banks and waterfalls along its course.

Trekking and nature walks in Nam Nung Nature Reserve and the surrounding plateau area are the main draw. Waterfall hopping is a full-day activity, with several falls within a 30 km radius. For a more relaxed experience, visit Lake Ea Sno for a boat ride or picnic. Local homestay experiences with M'Nong and Ma ethnic communities offer cultural immersion.

Central Highlands cuisine stars bitter cacao, giang leaf sour soup, and lam rice (rice cooked in bamboo tubes). Son Ma Restaurant, at 34 Quang Trung Street, Nghia Tan, is the largest restaurant in Đắk Nông province with capacity for up to 1,000 diners and pleasant scenery. Sunrise Cafe on 23 Tháng 3 Street serves coffee, other drinks, and breakfast. Street stalls around the market offer phở, bún bò, and com tấm for 20,000–50,000 dong.

Vietnamese coffee (cà phê sữa đá) is ubiquitous and excellent, as Đắk Nông is a coffee-growing region. Fresh sugarcane juice and coconut water are available from street vendors. Locally produced Central Highlands ruou can (rice wine drunk from a jar through bamboo straws) is a cultural experience at ethnic minority villages. Bottled water is widely available; avoid tap water.

• Budget: Khach San Ho Tay is a family-run hotel in a nice location with rooms for 160,000–200,000 dong per night.
• Mid-range: Sunrise Hotel on Dien Bien Phu Street offers clean rooms with air conditioning. Daknong Lodge Resort, Block 7, Trung Nghia Ward, ☏ +84 50 354 6200, is a resort-style option with pleasant grounds.
• Upscale: Aluminum Hotel on Quang Trung Street, Nghia Tan Ward, is one of the newer properties in town.

Gia Nghia has a central market selling local produce, coffee, and basic supplies. The Central Highlands are famous for robusta and arabica coffee — buy beans from local growers. Traditional woven fabrics and handicrafts from the M'Nong and Ma peoples can be found at small village workshops.

• Da Lat (150 km, 3.5 hr) — The hill-station city famous for its French colonial architecture, flower gardens, and cool climate.
• Dray Sap Waterfall (30 km) — A spectacular waterfall on the Đắk Lắk border, part of a system of four major falls.
• Ta Dung National Park (45 km) — Known as "Ha Long Bay of the Central Highlands" for its lake dotted with dozens of islands.
• Thac Mo (towards Saigon) — A less-travelled route towards Saigon; break up the trip by stopping in Cu Chi to see the tunnels.
