Lak

Đắk Lắk, Viet Nam

Why visit Lak?

Lak (also spelled Lắk) is a district in southern Đắk Lắk Province, located about 50 km south of Buon Ma Thuot. The district is best known for Lak Lake (Hồ Lắk), the largest natural lake in the Central Highlands and the second-largest in Vietnam. The area is home to a significant Ê-đê (Rhade) ethnic minority population, whose traditional longhouse villages line the lake shore. Lak offers a tranquil escape with stunning lake scenery, traditional culture, and outdoor activities.

The climate features a dry season from November to April and a rainy season from May to October. The lake is at its most picturesque during the wet season when the water levels are highest.

What are the things to do?

  • Lak Lake — The largest natural lake in the Central Highlands, surrounded by mountains and minority villages. Sunrise and sunset views are spectacular.
  • Jun Village — An Ê-đê village on the lake shore with traditional longhouses. Reachable on foot from Lak town.
  • Other lakeside villages — Several minority villages around the lake are accessible by foot, boat, or motorbike.

Take a boat trip across the lake (arrange directly with locals for a fair price). Visit the Ê-đê villages. Hike or cycle around the lake. Mr Đức from Café Duc Mai (+84 905 371 633, [email protected]) can arrange homestays in Jun longhouses for about US$5, as well as boat trips and other activities at reasonable prices.
