Yok Don National Park

Why visit Yok Don National Park?

Yok Don National Park (Vườn Quốc gia Yok Đôn) is Vietnam's largest nature reserve, covering approximately 115,000 hectares in Đắk Lắk Province, about 40 km northwest of Buon Ma Thuot. Established in 1991, the park protects one of the last remaining areas of dry dipterocarp forest in Vietnam, a unique ecosystem distinct from the wet rainforests found elsewhere in the country. The park is named after Yok Don Mountain, a granite peak that rises from the forest floor.

Yok Don is home to a remarkable diversity of wildlife, including Asian elephants, gaurs (Indian bison), wild water buffalo, deer, langurs, gibbons, and over 300 species of birds. The park also harbours the Serepôk River, which creates seasonal pools and riparian habitats that attract wildlife, especially during the dry season. The park's M'Nông and Ê-đê ethnic minority communities have lived in the area for centuries and maintain traditional customs.

The dry season from November to April is the best time for wildlife viewing, as animals congregate around water sources. The rainy season (May to October) can make some trails impassable but brings lush vegetation.

The easiest option is to arrange a taxi or private car from Buon Ma Thuot. Many hotels in Buon Ma Thuot can arrange day trips.

The park is vast and requires a guide for any exploration. Ranger-led treks on foot, by vehicle, or on elephant-back (observe, not ride) are available. The park headquarters can arrange guided walks of various lengths, from a few hours to multi-day expeditions. A motorbike is useful for reaching the park headquarters but not for park exploration itself.

What are the things to do?

  • Yok Don Mountain — The park's namesake peak, a prominent granite mountain visible from the surrounding plains.
  • Serepôk River — A major river that flows through the park, attracting wildlife during the dry season. Dry-season sandbars offer beautiful scenery.
  • Bà Khánh Lake — A small lake within the park, good for birdwatching and picnics.
  • Elephant observation — Yok Don is one of the few places in Vietnam where elephants can be seen in their natural habitat. The park has transitioned from elephant riding to ethical observation-based tourism.

Guided trekking is the main activity. Options range from short 2-hour walks near the headquarters to full-day treks deep into the forest. Night safaris offer a chance to spot nocturnal animals including civets, porcupines, and slow lorises. Birdwatching is excellent, with over 300 recorded species including the rare red-shanked douc langur. Visit nearby M'Nông and Ê-đê villages for cultural experiences.
