Lak Lake
Đắk Lắk, Viet Nam
Why visit Lak Lake?
Lak Lake (Hồ Lắk) is the largest natural lake in Vietnam's Central Highlands and the second-largest natural lake in the country. Located about 50 km south of Buon Ma Thuot in Lak District, the lake stretches across approximately 500 hectares and is surrounded by low mountains, coffee plantations, and traditional Ê-đê (Rhade) minority villages. The lake has long been a cultural and spiritual centre for the Ê-đê people, whose stilted longhouses line its shores.
The lake is at its fullest and most picturesque during the rainy season (May to October). The dry season (November to April) offers clearer skies and more comfortable temperatures for outdoor activities. The setting sun over the lake, with the Dã Lãnh mountain range in the background, is a memorable sight.

What are the things to do?
- Lak Lake — The vast, serene lake itself, with its dark, tree-lined waters reflecting the surrounding mountains.
- Jun Village (Buôn Jun) — The main Ê-đê village on the lake's edge, featuring traditional longhouses on stilts where families live, weave, and fish.
- M'Liêng Village — Another Ê-đê village reachable on foot from Jun or by boat across the lake.
- Sunset viewpoints — Several spots along the lake shore offer stunning sunset views over the water and mountains.
Take a boat trip across the lake in a traditional wooden boat, rowed by a local. Several hours on the lake visiting the far-shore villages is a highlight. Arrange directly with the boat owners at the shore for a fair price. Walk or cycle between Jun, M'Liêng, and other lakeside villages. Homestay experiences in Ê-đê longhouses provide an authentic cultural immersion.
