About Lelepa
Lelepa is a small island off the west coast of Efate, in Vanuatu's Shéfa Province, and a key part of Vanuatu's only UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Chief Roi Mata's Domain. The island is closely tied to the story of Roi Mata, a powerful 17th-century paramount chief who unified warring clans across central Vanuatu and is remembered as a great peacemaker. According to oral tradition preserved over centuries, Roi Mata died (or was poisoned) and was buried with his retinue on the nearby island of Eretoka (Hat Island); the cave on Lelepa, Fels Cave (Feles Cave), where he is said to have died, is part of the World Heritage listing along with his residence on the Efate mainland and his burial island.
For travellers, Lelepa is visited primarily on the Chief Roi Mata's Domain cultural tour, which weaves together the cave, the burial island, and the living oral history of the chief — a rare chance to engage with intangible heritage that has been transmitted through generations. Beyond the tour, Lelepa is a quiet island of villages, reefs, and clear water, easily reached from the west coast of Efate.
The climate is tropical and humid; the dry, cooler season (May–October) is the comfortable, calmer window, while the wet season (November–April) brings heavier rain and cyclone risk.

By Boat
The usual approach is a short boat crossing from the west coast of Efate (the Mangaliliu / Havannah Harbour area), arranged as part of the Chief Roi Mata's Domain tour or through a local boat operator. There is no fixed scheduled ferry; most visitors come on the guided tour.
Lelepa is explored on foot along village paths and by small boat along the coast and across to Eretoka (Hat) Island. The Roi Mata tour handles transport between the sites. There is no public transport and no banking; carry cash.
Things to do
Fels Cave (Feles Cave) — the large cave on Lelepa associated with the death of Chief Roi Mata, part of the World Heritage site, with ancient rock art and deep cultural significance; visited with a guide on the cultural tour.
Eretoka (Hat Island) — the offshore islet where Roi Mata and his retinue were buried, the burial component of the World Heritage listing; viewed or visited by boat (access may be restricted out of respect — follow guide instructions). (Eretoka has its own guide.)
Reefs and clear water — fringing reef around Lelepa for snorkelling.
Lelepa village — the island's traditional community, with the living oral tradition of Roi Mata.
Take the Chief Roi Mata's Domain tour — the reason most people come: a guided cultural experience linking Fels Cave, the mainland residence, and the burial island, with storytelling of the great chief.
Snorkel the reefs around Lelepa and the west-Efate islands.
Visit the village and hear the Roi Mata tradition firsthand.

Food is built on root crops (taro, yam, manioc), greens, fresh fish and shellfish, tropical fruit, and laplap; tours often include a village meal. There are no standalone restaurants — eat with your host or as part of the tour. Vegetarians are easily accommodated; mention dietary needs in advance.
Cafes & Nightlife
Kava is taken in the village nakamal at dusk. Fresh coconut water and basic soft drinks are available; alcohol is limited.
Water safety: treat tap, rain-tank, and bore water as not reliably potable — drink bottled, boiled, or filtered water and be cautious with ice.
