About Efate
Efate is the central island of Vanuatu and the heart of Shéfa Province, home to the national capital, Port Vila, and to the country's main international airport. It is the most developed and most visited island in the archipelago, and for the large majority of travellers it is the gateway to Vanuatu. Roughly oval and ringed by a sealed circuit road, Efate combines an easy, resort-lined south coast around Port Vila with a wilder, greener north and a string of small offshore islands (Iririki, Ifira, Lelepa, Moso, Nguna, Pele, Emao, Hat/Eretoka) that are themselves popular day trips.
While Port Vila is the urban and commercial centre (covered in its own guide), the rest of Efate is a circuit of beaches, lagoons, waterfalls, and reef. The Ring Road — sealed and drivable in a day — links a chain of attractions: cascades and blue lagoons, turtle-nesting beaches, snorkel reefs, and viewpoints over the offshore islands. Efate also carries deep history: it was an Allied base in World War II, and Eretoka (Hat Island) off the west coast holds the UNESCO-listed tomb of the 17th-century chief Roi Mata, the centrepiece of Vanuatu's only World Heritage site, the Chief Roi Mata's Domain.
The climate is tropical and humid; the dry, cooler season (May–October) is the comfortable, calmer window, while the wet season (November–April) is hotter, rainier, and carries cyclone risk. Most visitors base in or near Port Vila and explore the island by car, tour, or boat.

By Plane
Bauerfield International Airport (VLI), just north of Port Vila, is Vanuatu's main international gateway, with flights from Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, New Caledonia, and other Pacific points, plus domestic Air Vanuatu services to the outer islands. The airport is a short drive from central Port Vila; hotels arrange transfers and taxis and minivans are plentiful.
By Train
By Car / Road
Efate's sealed Ring Road circles the island and is easily driven in a day; hire cars are available in Port Vila. There is no road or vehicle ferry to other islands; onward island travel is by air or boat.
By Boat
Inter-island ferries and cargo/passenger vessels connect Efate (via Port Vila) with the outer islands, and small boats cross constantly to the offshore islands (Hideaway/Mele, Lelepa, Moso, Nguna, Pele). Cruise ships dock at Port Vila. Confirm inter-island schedules locally.
Efate is the easiest island in Vanuatu to get around. Minivans (public "bus", marked with a red B plate) swarm Port Vila and run along the populated south coast — flag one down, tell the driver your destination, and pay a flat fare in vatu. Taxis are metered or negotiated. Hire cars and scooters are available in Port Vila and are the best way to drive the Ring Road and reach the north and west independently. Day tours bundle the island's highlights, and small boats reach the offshore islands. Carry cash for rural sites and access fees, though Port Vila has banks and ATMs.
Things to do
Port Vila — the capital, with its market, waterfront, restaurants, and the offshore resort island of Iririki (see the Port Vila guide).
Mele Cascades — a series of waterfalls and turquoise pools cascading down a hillside near Mele, a short drive west of Port Vila; the island's most popular waterfall.
Blue Lagoon and blue holes (east Efate) — vivid blue swimming holes with rope swings along the east coast.
Eton Beach and Eton Blue Hole (east) — a white-sand beach and freshwater swimming spot on the Ring Road.
Chief Roi Mata's Domain (west Efate, Lelepa and Eretoka/Hat Island) — Vanuatu's only UNESCO World Heritage Site, encompassing the residence, death site, and burial island of the great peacemaking chief Roi Mata; visited on a guided tour by boat.
Offshore islands (Nguna, Pele, Moso, Lelepa) — reef-fringed islands off the north and west coasts with village stays, snorkelling, and turtle conservation.
Turtle Bay / Tranquility Island and north-coast reefs — snorkelling and turtle sanctuaries.
Drive the Ring Road — circle the island in a day, stopping at cascades, blue holes, beaches, and viewpoints.
Swim the Mele Cascades and the blue holes/lagoons of the east and west.
Take the Chief Roi Mata's Domain tour for Vanuatu's World Heritage history.
Snorkel and dive the reefs off the south and north coasts and around the offshore islands.
Boat or stay overnight on an offshore island (Pele, Nguna, Lelepa) for village life and snorkelling.
Zip-line, quad-bike, paddle, or game-fish — Efate has the country's widest range of organised activities, mostly booked in Port Vila.

Ask on WhatsAppFood & Dining
Efate, and Port Vila in particular, has by far the best and most varied dining in Vanuatu — French-influenced restaurants, fresh seafood, Melanesian laplap and root crops, and international options (see the Port Vila guide for specifics). Around the island, beach bars and resort restaurants serve fresh fish and Pacific fare.
- Port Vila restaurants and the market (budget to upscale) — the full range; see the Port Vila guide.
- Mele and Hideaway-area beach restaurants (mid-range) — seafood and Pacific fare west of town.
- Resort and beach-bar dining around the south and east coasts (mid-range to upscale) — scenic settings on the Ring Road.
Vegetarians and most dietary needs are well catered for in the Port Vila area; flag halal or gluten-free in advance.
Cafés & Nightlife
Kava is everywhere on Efate; Port Vila has dozens of nakamals (marked by a coloured light at the gate) where you buy a shell of fresh kava at dusk. Efate/Pango kava is milder than some outer-island varieties but still potent. Tusker lager, imported wine and spirits, cocktails, coffee, and fresh coconut water are widely available; Port Vila has the country's only real bar and nightlife scene.
Water safety: Port Vila's town water is generally treated, but treat rural tap and bore water as not reliably potable — drink bottled or filtered water where unsure and be cautious with ice from informal sources.
