Rangeley is a city in Maine with a population of 1,200 (2012), located in the Rangeley Lakes Region of Franklin County. It serves as the center of this resort area, which includes the villages of Oquossoc, Haines Landing, and South Rangeley. The region is known for its pristine lakes, mountain scenery, and outdoor recreation opportunities throughout the year. Rangeley Lake, the largest of the Rangeley Lakes, offers excellent fishing, boating, and scenic views.
The Rangeley Lakes Region has been a popular resort destination since the late 19th century, when wealthy visitors from Boston and New York built grand sporting camps and hotels in the area. The region experiences four distinct seasons. Summers are warm and pleasant, ideal for boating, fishing, and hiking. Fall foliage peaks in late September to early October, with spectacular views across the lakes and mountains. Winter brings heavy snowfall and cold temperatures, making it a destination for snowmobiling, skiing, and ice fishing. Spring sees the melting of ice on the lakes and the return of outdoor activities.

By Car / Road
The ride into Rangeley from the Maine Turnpike requires taking the Rt. 4 exit. The ride up Rt. 4 is roughly two hours into Rangeley and has some hilly, windy roads. From Portland, take the Maine Turnpike to Route 4 North, approximately 120 miles (about 2.5 hours). From Augusta, take Route 27 North to Route 4 North, approximately 70 miles (about 1.5 hours).
Most people in the region get around by driving. It's the most practical way to get to the many cottages, hikes, and surrounding small towns. Parking downtown can be tricky during a busy summer afternoon but is generally easy. The town itself is compact and easy to walk between stores once you're here. Outside of downtown, the roads have little berm, no sidewalks, high speed limits, and large logging trucks.
The nearby Appalachian Trail brings people walking from Georgia. It's a bit of a slog into town along a busy Rt 4 with no sidewalk. Drivers are friendly and will often pick up hikers who want to hitchhike into town. In summer, committed cyclists bike around the lake. Shops in town also rent fat tire bikes to go on the snowmobile trails during the summertime.
Maine Snowmobile Association ITS trails go throughout the region. They are a scenic way to get around during the winter (with a snowmobile) and summer (with an ATV). The monthly, reservation-required Western Maine Transportation bus connects Rangeley to surrounding towns.
